Magical Namaqualand

Around the month of September the West coast of South Africa bursts into colour as millions of different colours and types of flowers, mostly daisies, carpet the landscape.  The flowering season attracts viewers every year from all over.

The dry and harsh West Coast and Karoo biome in the Northern Province is an unlikely place for these flowers to blossom. But in the short rainy wintertime  they flower, pollinate and produce large amounts of precious seeds which can lie inactive for years in the Richtersveld and Namaqualand dusty area. Then suddenly, in their flowering glory, they attract large amounts of insects like bees and butterflies and transform the landscape into a place of beauty and buzzing life.

Different seeds germinate under different conditions of temperature and moisture, so every year the flower display differs in

Celebrating Whale Season

Hermanus Whale Festival South Africa

Last Weekend the town of Hermanus, south of Cape Town, hosted the annual September whale festival to celebrate the return of the Southern Right Whales to the shores of South Africa. The festival attracts about  100 000 visitors every year to observe whales and revel in the entertainment running the whole weekend.

There was something for everyone at the Whale festival from live South African bands and African rhythms, comedy and poetry to the Whale 'n Wheels Vintage classic car show.

For the more active there was the the Whale Festival Half Marathon, Mountain bike race and netball tournament and for some adventure  shark cage diving, bird watching Fynbos hikes, baboons and and kayak trips were on offer.

With a strong focus on  the  environment, marine life and marine protection there was educational displays for  kids and well known guest speakers giving informative talks.

The 2010 Whale festival was a great success with the main act; The Whales breaching playing and celebrating spring - stealing the show once again!
